Harry achieved degrees in biomedical science (molecular pathology) and law from Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand.
He was the dux of his high school coming first in biology, calculus, chemistry, Japanese and physics. He was awarded a five-year scholarship to study biochemistry at Tokyo University, but gave that up to pursue law. He is admitted to the High Court of New Zealand and the Supreme Court of Western Australia. Harry is the father of three daughters (twins who are 24 years old and a five-year-old girl), a three-year-old boy, and four step-children.
He also has four grandchildren.
His maternal grandparents were of Welsh, English, Scots-Irish, and French descent and his paternal grandparents were of Maori, French and Welsh-Irish descent. Harry spends his free time with his wife, family, German Shepherd dog and two cats. He enjoys weight lifting and kickboxing in his home gym, Boxfit at the Kwinana Rec Centre and watching rugby. He enjoys shopping at Kmart and Bunnings and going to church in Rockingham.
